THE WEIGHT OF REVENGE / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The TransformationOver the next twenty-one days, my quiet, isolated life transformed into a whirlwind of strategy, confidence, and quiet empowerment.

Gabriel didn't ask me to change who I was. He didn't suggest crash diets, weight-loss programs, or fake veneers. Instead, he opened the doors to Manhattan’s most exclusive haute couture ateliers, introducing me to master designers who celebrated curves, structure, and bold, unapologetic beauty.

"You spend your life designing monuments of strength, Valerie," Gabriel told me one evening as we sat in his private penthouse studio, watching a tailor fit a bespoke silk gown. "It's time you wear one."

The gown selected for the wedding was an absolute masterpiece: a heavy, obsidian-black floor-length silk gown with a subtle, daring thigh-high slit, an off-the-shoulder neckline that emphasized my collarbones, and a corseted waist that embraced every single curve of my body with regal power.

As I stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror in Gabriel's penthouse, looking at myself in the sleek black dress, tears welled in my eyes.

For a year, Michael had made me feel invisible. He had made me feel like my body was a flaw to be hidden, a shame to be apologized for. But standing here, framed by diamonds and silk, I didn't look broken. I looked like a queen about to reclaim her throne.

Gabriel walked up behind me, standing tall in his black suit. He reached out, his warm, broad hand resting gently on my shoulder, his reflection meeting mine in the glass.

"You look stunning, Valerie," Gabriel whispered against my ear, his voice sending a thrilling shiver straight down my spine. "Never let small men make you feel like you take up too much space."

"Why are you doing this for me, Gabriel?" I asked softly, turning to face him. "A man in your position doesn't spend weeks playing knight in shining armor for a stranger."

Gabriel’s dark eyes softened, a rare, genuine warmth breaking through his usual stoic armor.

"Five years ago, Valerie, my younger brother was ruined by people who mistook his kindness for weakness," Gabriel confessed gently. "I watched him lose his confidence, his business, and his joy because he believed their lies. When I saw you at that bar... I saw that same light being threatened by shallow, cruel people. I vowed then that as long as I have power, bullies don't get to win."

He extended his hand toward me, his dark eyes burning with absolute devotion.

"Shall we go to Napa Valley, Miss Sullivan?"

I placed my hand in his, feeling the solid, unyielding strength of his grip.

"Let's go burn their fairy tale down," I replied.
