Chapter 9 - A FRIENDSHIP FORGED IN AN EMERGENCY

Over the next few weeks, Eric and I fell into an easy, comforting routine. Between his pre-med classes and my bookstore shifts, we shared late-night diner meals, studied at the public library, and talked about everything my family had forbidden me from exploring: my art, my writing, my hopes for a career in graphic design.
One afternoon, while we were sitting at a sticky booth in the diner sharing a basket of fries, Eric reached across the table and touched my wrist—not checking my pulse this time, but offering a quiet gesture of reassurance. “You know, you’re entirely different when you aren't walking on eggshells,” he observed, smiling.

“I feel like I’m breathing real air for the first time,” I admitted, looking down at my hands. “I was so terrified of what my parents would do when they realized I wasn't coming back.”
“Let them try whatever they want,” Eric said firmly. “They can’t control you anymore. You have documentation from the ER, my witness statement, and your own freedom.” His unwavering support became the anchor I never knew I needed, transforming a terrifying escape into the foundation of an unbreakable bond.
