Chapter 10 - THE FAMILY’S PUBLIC IMAGE CAMPAIGN

My parents, however, refused to let go quietly. When they realized I wasn't calling to apologize or begging for grocery money, they launched a sophisticated public relations campaign designed to salvage their precious social standing. Across Facebook and neighborhood community groups, my mother posted heart-wrenching paragraphs about my “sudden, mysterious mental health crisis” and how they were “praying for their troubled daughter who had tragically cut off her loving family.”
Friends from church and distant relatives began messaging me with unsolicited advice, telling me to honor my mother and forgive my father. Even Jake sent a text calling me selfish for breaking our mother’s heart.
Instead of hiding, I decided to take control of the narrative. Using my laptop, I drafted a public response on my personal page—not attacking them with anger, but stating the factual reality of what happened on October 14th: “On my mother’s birthday, I suffered a severe panic attack and oxygen deprivation while working in the kitchen. When I whispered that I couldn't breathe, I was told I was faking it and ordered to clean glasses. Thanks to a bystander who called 911, I received life-saving medical care. I am safe, healthy, and finally learning what it means to breathe.” The post spread like wildfire across mutual acquaintances, instantly silencing my mother’s sympathy-seeking posts.
