Chapter 14 - Whitmore Lost Its Name

Whitmore Development eventually rebranded.

Not because of scandal alone.

Family control had declined.

Employees and institutional investors now held majority interests.

The board chose Meridian Urban Group.

Adelaide cried.

Grant supported it.

“The company should stop asking employees to carry our family history.”

When the old Whitmore letters came down from Park Avenue, I stood across the street with Grant, Adelaide, and several executives.

Grant looked at me.

“Your grandmother won.”

“No.”

“What?”

“She wanted the company to survive.”

He smiled.

“Fair.”

Hawthorne retained a minority investment under transparent terms.

The old ground lease was replaced with a modern structure.

No hidden debt.

No secret rights.

Miles retired at eighty-six.

He told me, “Eleanor would complain we made everything too simple.”

“Good.”

May you like

“Then approve.”

We laughed.
