Chapter 5 - The Boy With Dante’s Eyes

Noah Carter had not been kidnapped.

At least not exactly.

Security footage showed him walking voluntarily toward a woman outside school.

The woman wore sunglasses and a baseball cap.

Noah hugged her.

Dante stared at the footage.

“He knew her.”

Marcus nodded.

Cara watched again.

“Pause.”

The image froze.

The woman’s face remained partially hidden.

But the bracelet on her wrist was visible.

Cara recognized it.

Vanessa wore the same diamond bracelet at Bellini’s.

“It’s her.”

Dante’s chair scraped backward.

Vanessa had his son.

A burner phone rang ten minutes later.

Dante answered.

“Hello, darling.”

Vanessa.

“Where is Noah?”

“So you finally know his name.”

“If you hurt him—”

“I protected him.”

Dante froze.

“What?”

“For nine years, I paid to keep him safe.”

“You told me he was dead.”

“Because your mother gave me no choice.”

Vanessa claimed Isabella had taken the baby after uncovering threats against the Moretti family.

But Vanessa had discovered the foster placement.

She secretly funded Noah’s upbringing.

“Why?”

“Because he was my son too.”

Dante’s anger faltered.

“You tried to kill me.”

“I tried to escape you.”

“You cut my brakes.”

“I ordered nothing.”

“Cara heard you.”

“She heard a performance.”

Vanessa explained Julian had been blackmailing her.

She knew he was recording the conversation.

So she deliberately fed him false information.

Dante looked at Julian.

His brother’s face tightened.

“She's lying.”

“Am I?” Vanessa said through the speaker. “Ask Julian where forty-seven million dollars actually went.”

Marcus checked the financial records.

The transfers did not end in Vanessa’s accounts.

They ended in companies controlled by Julian.

Dante slowly turned toward his brother.

Julian backed away.

“This is manipulated.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Run, Julian.”

He did.

Julian sprinted toward the rear door.

Marcus tackled him before he reached it.

Dante stared at the brother he had nearly trusted again.

“You put Cross in my trunk?”

Julian remained silent.

That silence was enough.

But Noah was still missing.

“Vanessa,” Dante said, “bring him home.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because someone more dangerous than Julian is coming.”

“Who?”

The call disconnected.

Dante immediately ordered the signal traced.

They found Vanessa at a roadside motel two hours away.

Noah sat inside eating pizza.

When Dante entered, the boy looked up.

Their eyes met.

Neither moved.

Dante had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without blinking.

Now he could not cross ten feet.

Noah swallowed.

“Are you Dante?”

“Yes.”

“My biological father?”

Dante’s voice broke.

“Yes.”

Noah studied him.

“You look older than the pictures.”

Cara nearly laughed through her tears.

Dante knelt.

“I've been looking for you.”

“No, you haven't.”

The words struck hard.

“You thought I was dead.”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa told me.”

Dante looked toward his wife.

She stood beside the window.

“She told me you hated me,” Noah continued.

Dante’s face changed.

Vanessa whispered, “Noah—”

“You said he didn't want children.”

Dante stood.

“You told him that?”

Vanessa began crying.

“I was angry.”

“For nine years?”

“I lost him too!”

“You knew where he was.”

“And your mother made me swear not to bring him back!”

Dante struggled to control himself.

Cara moved closer to Noah.

The child looked overwhelmed.

Then headlights appeared outside.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

Three black vehicles entered the parking lot.

Vanessa’s face drained of color.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

She looked at Dante.

“The people your father spent his entire life hiding from you.”

A bullet shattered the motel window.

Dante threw himself over Noah.

Cara dropped beside them.

Marcus returned fire while security rushed through the corridor.

Dante held his son beneath him.

May you like

For the first time in nine years, father and child touched.

And someone was already trying to separate them again.
