Chapter 12 - The Night Cara Almost Walked Away

Love did not erase fear.
Cara learned that when Dante proposed.
Not with diamonds.
Not initially.
He took her to the mountain road.
The guardrail had been repaired.
A small memorial marker honored Samuel Cross.
Dante stood beside it.
“I died here.”
Cara frowned.
“You're being dramatic.”
“The man I was died.”
He took out a ring.
Cara stopped breathing.
“The man who climbed back onto that road wants every ordinary morning he can get.”
He knelt.
“Preferably with you.”
Cara cried.
Then said, “I can't.”
Dante’s face fell.
Not because she didn't love him.
Because she did.
But marriage to Dante meant becoming public.
It meant reporters.
Security.
Threats.
A life she had never chosen.
“I need time.”
Dante stood.
He did not pressure her.
“Take it.”
For two weeks they barely spoke.
Noah was furious.
“You love him.”
“Yes.”
“He loves you.”
“Yes.”
“Adults are exhausting.”
Cara laughed.
Then Noah gave her something.
A school essay.
THE PERSON WHO CHANGED MY FAMILY.
It was about Cara.
Not because she saved Dante.
Because she taught everyone that courage was doing something while afraid.
Cara read the final sentence three times.
Sometimes family is the person who reaches down when you're falling and refuses to let your hand go.
She cried.
That evening she drove to Dante’s house.
He opened the door.
Cara held up the ring.
“You still offering?”
His eyes widened.
“I may need to reconsider.”
She punched his shoulder.
He laughed and pulled her close.
“Yes?”
“Yes.”
Noah screamed from upstairs.
“I KNEW IT!”
Cara buried her face against Dante.
“Does that child ever stop listening?”
“No.”

And for the first time, the future did not frighten her.
It felt like something worth running toward.
