Chapter 7 - The Trial of Lorraine RowanThree months later, the formal sentencing hearing for State of South Carolina v. Lorraine Rowan was convened at the Charleston County Judicial Center.

The courtroom was filled to maximum capacity with local reporters, legal scholars, and high-society figures who had followed the shocking collapse of the Rowan family empire under national headlines: “Charleston Matriarch Indicted: How Fake Betrayal Almost Killed Her Grandchild.”
Lorraine Rowan sat at the defense desk wearing a dull grey county detention jumpsuit. Over her three months in custody awaiting trial, her arrogant, pristine posture had completely shattered—her hair was unwashed and graying at the roots, her skin gaunt, her eyes hollow and dark.
Beside her sat a public defender assigned to her case after every high-priced private attorney in Charleston withdrew due to unpaid legal retainers.
When Hannah was called to the stand to deliver her victim impact statement, a profound hush fell over the entire room.
Hannah walked up to the witness stand wearing an elegant dark green dress, holding her head high, her posture confident and serene.
She looked directly into the eyes of the magistrate.
“Four months ago, Lorraine Rowan stood on my porch while I was bleeding to death inside my home,” Hannah testified clearly, her voice echoing off the high stone walls. “She blocked my doctor from entering, intercepted my emergency calls, and staged my bedroom to make my husband believe I was an unfaithful wife.”
She turned her eyes to Lorraine at the defense table.
“She didn't do it out of madness,” Hannah stated calmly. “She did it because she believed my life and my child’s life were acceptable sacrifices to maintain her control over her son. She thought cruelty made her powerful.”
In the gallery, several female jurors wept softly. The lead prosecutor sat with his hands folded, glaring at the defense table with absolute disgust.
When the judge asked Lorraine if she wished to make a final statement, Lorraine stood up trembling, her voice cracking into a desperate, pathetic whine.
“Your Honor... please!” Lorraine sobbed, reaching her cuffed hands toward the bench. “I am a mother! Everything I did was out of love for my son! I was only trying to protect Caleb from being taken advantage of!”
Judge Marcus Thomas looked down at her over his glasses with unyielding, glacial severity.
“Mrs. Rowan,” Judge Thomas declared, his voice thunderous. “Your actions demonstrated an extraordinary depth of sociopathic manipulation, domestic cruelty, and cold-blooded greed. You used a daughter-in-law’s medical emergency as a weapon to destroy a marriage, endangering the life of an unborn infant.”
Judge Thomas slammed his heavy wooden gavel down with resounding force.
“I sentence you to twelve years in state prison at the Camille Griffin Graham Correctional Institution, without the possibility of early parole.”

As court officers chained Lorraine’s ankles to lead her away through the heavy iron doors, she turned toward the gallery one last time, screaming out: “Caleb! Caleb, my baby! Tell them to stop! I’m your mother!”
Caleb sat in the front row beside Hannah, his arm wrapped securely around her waist, staring straight ahead, refusing to look at his mother’s frantic figure as she was dragged away to her cell forever.
