THE VEIL OF DEVOTION / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Financial FalloutWhile Hannah and baby Claire continued their recovery at Harbor Regional, a secondary storm erupted across Lorraine Rowan’s social and financial network.

For over a decade, Lorraine had operated the Rowan Heritage Foundation—a prominent Charleston charitable trust established by Caleb’s late father, designed to fund local historical preservation and pediatric medical care. Lorraine had used her position as Managing Trustee to maintain her high-society standing, host lavish galas, and control the family’s real estate assets.

However, three days after the hospital incident, Caleb executed his legal authority as the primary executor of his father’s underlying estate trust.

Accompanied by Samuel Vance and a team of forensic accountants from Deloitte, Caleb walked into the Foundation’s downtown offices on Broad Street.

Inside the executive suite, Lorraine’s private secretary, Clara, stood nervously beside a mountain of audit files.

“Mr. Rowan,” Clara stammered. “Your mother is currently at her legal defense counsel’s office, but she instructed us not to release the financial ledgers without a court order.”

“I don't need a court order, Clara,” Caleb replied calmly, pulling a certified copy of his father’s original trust deed from his jacket. “As of eight o'clock this morning, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to remove Lorraine Rowan from all executive positions due to pending criminal indictments.”

Samuel Vance opened his briefcase, laying a series of bank freeze notices on the desk.

“Over the past forty-eight hours,” Samuel explained, “our forensic team discovered that Lorraine transferred over four hundred thousand dollars from the Foundation’s reserve accounts over the last three years to fund her private lifestyle and pay off debt accrued by Victoria’s failed boutique firm.”

Caleb closed his eyes briefly, feeling a dull ache in his temples. His mother’s grand facade of aristocratic perfection had been built on systemic theft and emotional manipulation.

“Freeze every account linked to her name, Samuel,” Caleb ordered coldly. “Audit every transaction going back five years. If there is a single penny unaccounted for, we report it directly to the State Attorney General.”

At that exact moment, the double doors of the office burst open.

Victoria Rowan rushed inside, her hair messy, her designer outfit disheveled, holding her smartphone.

“Caleb!” Victoria shrieked, tears of panic running down her face. “What are you doing?! My business accounts just got frozen! I can’t pay my staff! My landlord just served me with an eviction notice!”

Caleb turned to look at his younger sister with calm, detached pity.

“Your boutique was funded with stolen money from Dad’s foundation, Victoria,” Caleb stated flatly. “The party is over.”

“Caleb, please!” Victoria wept, falling into a chair. “Mom told me everything was legitimate! She told me you approved the transfers! I didn't know she tried to hurt Hannah! I swear I didn't know!”

“You sat in that hospital lobby four days ago and called my bleeding wife an unfaithful liar, Victoria,” Caleb reminded her, his voice devoid of anger, carrying only cold truth. “You enabled Mom’s sickness for years because it was financially convenient for you.”

He stepped closer, looking down at his sister.

“If you want to avoid being named as a co-conspirator in the grand larceny indictment, you will surrender the keys to the company car, forfeit your interest in the townhouse, and agree to testify truthfully regarding Mom’s accounting practices.”

Victoria stared at her brother, realizing with terrifying clarity that the brother who used to fix every family problem was no longer offering mercy.

She slowly pulled the gold key fob from her purse and laid it on the desk, weeping silently.
