Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the RuinsThe jury deliberated for less than two hours.

When they returned to the courtroom, the verdicts were read with brutal, swift finality: Guilty on all counts.

Marcus Voss was sentenced to forty years in federal prison for wire fraud, grand larceny, and bigamy. Cecilia Voss received life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for her direct role in the second-degree murder of Evelyn Carter.

As the marshals led them away in heavy chains, Marcus turned his head for a brief second, looking at me with a mixture of terror and disbelief. I didn't say a word. I simply watched them disappear through the heavy steel doors of the court holding facility, ending their reign of terror forever.

Three months later, the sun was shining brightly over my father’s coastal property.

The ocean breeze carried the sweet scent of pine and saltwater. The five historic cottages, which Marcus had tried so desperately to steal, had been completely restored and repainted in bright, warm colors.

I stood on the wide wooden porch of the main cottage, holding a mug of hot coffee, watching a group of local veterans and their families enjoying a weekend barbecue on the lawn.

Detective Miller walked up the porch steps, carrying a box of freshly baked pastries.

“Looks like a real home now, Maya,” Miller said with a warm smile, setting the box on the porch table.

“It always was,” I replied, looking out over the blue ocean. “It just needed to be cleared of the weeds.”

My father’s attorney, Arthur, walked over, handing me a leather-bound folder. “The court has finalized the asset forfeiture recovery, Maya. Every dollar Marcus and Cecilia attempted to steal has been returned, along with three million dollars in seized funds from their offshore accounts.”

“What are you going to do with the seized money?” Miller asked.

I smiled, watching the children laughing as they ran across the green lawn toward the beach.

“We’re establishing the Evelyn Carter Foundation,” I said softly. “A national advocacy group that provides free forensic financial audits and legal protection for women targeting by romance scammers and corporate predators.”
