Chapter 7 - The Claws OutBy late afternoon, the precinct headquarters downtown was overrun with federal agents, state prosecutors, and news crews who had picked up the story of the high-profile arrest at the marina.

Inside Interrogation Room B, Cecilia Voss sat beneath the harsh fluorescent lights, her lace cover-up replaced by a gray detention jumpsuit. Her expensive blonde hair was messy, and her polished composure had completely shattered into bitter, spiteful rage.

Across the metal table sat Detective Miller and myself.

“I want a deal,” Cecilia spat, slamming her manicured hands onto the table. “Marcus was the mastermind! He chose the targets! He forged the divorce papers! I was just following his instructions!”

“That’s not what your bank records say, Cecilia,” I said, opening a thick leather binder filled with financial spreadsheets. “Over the last five years, seventy percent of the liquidated assets from your previous victims were transferred directly into a private Swiss account registered under your maiden name.”

Cecilia glared at me with pure venom. “You think you’re so smart, don't you? You think because you have a badge, you’re better than us? Your father was a greedy old man who hoarded oceanfront land while real people struggled!”

“My father worked forty years in a shipyard to buy that land,” I replied coldly, leaning across the table until I was inches from her face. “He built those cottages with his own hands to give homeless veterans a place to live. You and Marcus tried to turn his life’s work into a Cayman Islands tax haven.”

Detective Miller pushed a fresh stack of federal indictments across the table.

“Cecilia Voss,” Miller read aloud, “you are being formally charged with federal wire fraud, grand larceny, conspiracy to commit murder in the second degree regarding the death of Evelyn Carter in 2022, and felony bigamy compliance. The prosecutor is recommending a minimum sentence of thirty-five years without parole.”

Cecilia’s breath hitched. The color drained completely from her face. “Thirty-five years? No... no! Marcus! Where is Marcus?! Tell him to talk to them!”

“Your 'son' is in Room A right now,” Miller said with a dark smile. “And he just signed a full confession blaming you for the murder of Evelyn Carter in exchange for avoiding the death penalty.”

Cecilia let out a horrific, blood-curdling shriek of betrayal, collapsing forward onto the metal table as the guards stepped in to lead her away.
