Chapter 6 - The Sting in Room 408Marcus reacted with the frantic desperation of a trapped animal. He grabbed Cecilia, shoving her forcefully toward the advancing federal agents, and bolted down the side gangway toward a speed boat docked at the end of the pier.

âGet back here, Voss!â Detective Miller roared, giving chase alongside two tactical officers.
Cecilia screamed as she stumbled over her high heels, crashing onto the wooden deck. An officer immediately pinned her arms behind her back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
âYou canât touch me!â she shrieked, her silk scarf falling off to reveal her manicured, furious face. âIâm his mother! I haven't done anything illegal!â
âSave it for the federal grand jury, Mrs. Voss,â the officer grunted, hauling her up by her arm. âWe have your voice on an encrypted wire admitting to a joint criminal enterprise.â
At the end of the pier, Marcus reached the speed boat, wildly trying to untie the thick mooring ropes with his shaking hands. He looked back, seeing three federal barrels pointed directly at his chest.
âItâs over, Marcus,â Detective Miller called out, his voice echoing across the water. âThe coast guard has blocked the harbor channel. You aren't going anywhere.â
Marcus stood frozen on the edge of the boat, his handsome face twisted in a terrifying mask of rage and defeat. He looked at Detective Miller, then looked across the pier at me, standing tall and unbothered in my summer dress.
âWho the hell are you?â Marcus screamed, his voice breaking with desperation. âYou were just a pathetic, lonely girl! You were nobody!â
I walked slowly down the pier, stepping past the scattered papers from his briefcase that were blowing in the ocean breeze. I pulled my leather credential wallet from my pocket and held it up for him to see.
May you like
âMy name is Senior Federal Examiner Maya Bennett,â I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the wind. âAnd you just attempted to defraud the United States Inspector Generalâs office.â
Marcusâs legs gave out. He collapsed backward onto the vinyl seats of the boat, his head in his hands, as the agents swarmed over the railing and forced his arms into iron cuffs.
