Chapter 2 - The Golden MedallionI stared at Dean Carter through my wet lashes, clutching my canvas bag against my chest.

"Dean Carter... I just came off a trauma shift at Mass General," I stammered, my teeth chattering. "My family took my VIP ticket and told security I wasn't allowed inside."
Dean Carter’s face darkened with absolute, thunderous fury.
"You are not a guest, Emily," Dean Carter said with fierce, resonant authority. "You are the Valedictorian of the Class of 2026. You are the sole author of the targeted oncological nanoparticle patent that secured our university a forty-million-dollar federal research grant. No one locks my finest prodigy out of her own house."
Dean Carter turned to the university security detail standing under the portico. "Officer Davis, escort Dr. Parker to the presidential private dressing suite immediately! Bring the embroidered master regalia, dry towels, and inform the ceremonial marshal that the procession will wait for Dr. Parker's arrival!"
Ten minutes later, inside the warm, wood-paneled executive suite, university staff dried my hair, pinned it into an elegant French twist, and helped me slip into an immaculate, custom-tailored black doctoral gown with royal blue velvet panels and gold piping.
Dean Carter walked in, accompanied by Dr. Julian Montgomery—the thirty-two-year-old Chief of Pediatric Oncology at Mass General and the keynote patron of the ceremony.
Julian stood tall, athletic, with sharp hazel eyes, looking at me with radiant, unvarnished admiration.
"You performed three emergency valve repairs last night, Emily," Julian said, his deep baritone warm and steady as he handed me a hot cup of black tea. "And now you're about to receive the highest academic honor in the state. You are unstoppable."
"Thank you, Julian," I smiled, a genuine warmth blossoming in my chest.

Dean Carter placed the heavy solid-gold Valedictorian Medallion around my neck and handed me the university’s ceremonial leather binder.
"Head held high, Dr. Parker," Dean Carter commanded proudly. "Go claim what is yours."
