Chapter 6 - The Foreclosure ThreatLena let out a shrill gasp, clutching the porch railing. “Cash?! Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars?! Audrey, where did you get that kind of money?!”

“I built a company while you were sleeping in the master bedroom, Lena,” I said, my voice cold and steady.
Derek’s face went pale, his cocky posture completely collapsing. “Audrey... listen... we can work this out! We’re family!”
“Family doesn't pack a nurse’s life into a grocery bag after a fourteen-hour shift, Derek,” I replied.
My mother stepped out onto the porch, her eyes wide with shock as she looked at me in my suit.
“Audrey...” my mother wept, her voice trembling. “My baby...”
I walked up the porch steps, stopping in front of Derek and Lena.
“As the primary mortgage holder,” I announced, holding up the legal notice, “you are ninety days delinquent on your second equity line. You have twenty-four hours to produce the one hundred and fifty thousand dollars you borrowed using my mother’s forged signature, or I will initiate immediate foreclosure proceedings.”
“One hundred and fifty thousand?!” Lena shrieked, turning her furious gaze onto Derek. “Derek! What is she talking about?! You told me the loan was for twenty thousand!”
Derek stuttered, backing away toward the door. “Lena... babe... the crypto market dropped... I was going to pay it back!”

The truth was finally out in the open.
The real thief in our family wasn't the tired nurse who worked double shifts. It was the smug brother-in-law who had bled my family dry while hiding behind a power drill.
