Chapter 5 - The Mortgage DeceptionAt eight-thirty the following morning, a sleek black town car picked me up from the Marriott Hotel.

I wore a tailored navy suit, high-end heels, and carried a leather briefcase. I had left my scrubs and nursing shoes behind, but my mother’s Bible was tucked safely inside my bag.

Accompanied by Arthur Vance and two uniformed county sheriff deputies, we pulled up to my family’s house.

The lawn was unkempt, the porch paint peeling. Standing on the front porch was Derek, wearing a rumpled shirt, holding his phone nervously, while Lena stood beside him pacing back and forth in panic.

When my town car pulled up, Lena’s eyes widened in disbelief.

I stepped out of the vehicle, my posture straight, my eyes calm and unshakeable.

“Audrey?!” Lena gasped, taking in my designer suit and the two sheriff deputies following behind me. “Where did you get that car?! What is going on?!”

Derek marched down the porch steps, his face red with anger. “Audrey! What did you do to the title office?! The buyer canceled the sale! I needed that cash today!”

Arthur Vance stepped forward, pulling a blue folder from his briefcase.

“Mr. Miller,” Arthur spoke, his voice booming with authority. “You are addressing Miss Audrey Bennett, sole owner of Bennett Health Technologies and primary holder of the underlying mortgage note on this property.”

Derek froze. “What... what are you talking about? The mortgage belongs to Fifth Third Bank!”

“It did belong to Fifth Third Bank,” Arthur corrected him smoothly. “Until one hour ago, when Miss Bennett purchased the full mortgage note and accrued debt for four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in cash.”
