Chapter 2 - The Emergency Room NightmareThe wailing of the ambulance siren cut through the humid Charlotte afternoon, but to me, the sound was muted, swallowed by the roaring blood in my ears. I was strapped to a gurney, the rough leather digging into my back as the paramedics moved with terrifying, practiced efficiency. The stranger who had pulled me from the pool—a kind-hearted woman named Clara who had been a guest of a guest—rode in the back with me, her hand holding mine tightly.

"Stay with me, honey. Look at me," Clara urged, her eyes wide with shock and empathy. "You're going to make it. Both of you."
I couldn't speak. Every breath felt like inhaling shards of glass. The contractions were coming faster now, unrelenting waves of agony that tore through my lower abdomen. I looked down at my soaked, pale pink dress, now stained with a terrifying crimson bloom that spread across my lap.
When the ambulance slammed to a halt outside Mercy General Hospital, everything sped up. Doors flew open, blinding fluorescent lights rushed past overhead, and a flurry of scrubs and white coats swarmed around me.
"Patient is twenty-eight weeks—wait, eight months pregnant, trauma victim, severe abdominal impact followed by a fall into a swimming pool. Premature rupture of membranes and active hemorrhage!" a paramedic shouted over the clatter of the wheels.

A doctor with sharp, compassionate eyes leaned over me. "Sarah? Can you hear me? I’m Dr. Vance. We need to get you into emergency surgery right now. Your baby is in distress."
They wheeled me into the operating room, a sterile, blindingly bright space that smelled of antiseptic and cold steel. As the mask was pressed over my face, the last thing I heard before the anesthesia dragged me down into the abyss was the frantic monitor flatlining into a steady, terrifying beep.
