Chapter 12 - Shadows in the SunTwo years passed like a gentle tide.

Verdant Grace had blossomed into one of the most successful boutique shops in downtown Charleston. Julian and I had moved from being friendly neighbors to something much deeper—a partnership built on mutual respect, patience, and absolute trust. He knew about my past; I had told him everything on our third date, expecting him to run. Instead, he had held my hand across the table, his eyes shining with tears, and whispered, "You survived the worst storm imaginable, Sarah. Now you get to live in the sunshine."
One Saturday morning, as I was opening the shop, a local newspaper was delivered to my doorstep.
I picked it up, glancing at the headlines, when a small syndicated brief from North Carolina caught my eye.
“Inmate Linda Brooks, formerly of Charlotte, denied parole in landmark family fraud and endangerment case.”
I stopped, staring at the ink on the paper.
Inside the prison walls, my mother was aging rapidly, stripped of her makeup, her pearls, her social standing, and her favorite daughter. Emily had completely vanished, having moved out of state under an assumed name, never once visiting or writing to either of our parents. The mighty Brooks family hadn't just fallen; they had evaporated into dust, destroyed entirely by their own malice and greed.

I folded the newspaper, walked over to the recycling bin, and dropped it inside.
I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel triumph. I felt... nothing. They were ghosts of a life I had left behind in another lifetime.
