Chapter 3 - THE COLD HAND OF WINTER

The room grew so cold and silent you could hear the ice melting in the champagne buckets. The security guards
who had been standing by the doors immediately stood at absolute attention.
Nobody in the Sterling social circle knew Arthur Vance’s face—he was a reclusive legend, a shadow
billionaire who owned the shipping lanes, the steel mills, and the very banks that held the Sterling family’s debts.
But the moment he walked into the room, the sheer weight of his presence commanded absolute submission.
Arthur walked down the center aisle of the ballroom, his gaze locked entirely on Clara. When he saw her torn
dress, her exposed belly, and the tears drying on her face, his eyes turned into chips of blue ice.
Patricia, completely unaware of who she was addressing, stepped forward haughtily. “Sir, this is a private
family matter. This woman is a thief, and we are handling her.”
Arthur didn’t even look at Patricia. He walked right past her, as if she were made of glass, and stopped in front
of Clara.
The two dark-suited men behind him immediately stepped forward. One of them gently draped a luxurious
cashmere overcoat over Clara’s shoulders, shielding her from the prying eyes and cameras.
“Are you alright, my love?” Arthur asked. His voice was soft, but it carried an underlying rumble of pure,
controlled rage.
Clara clutched the coat around her tattered dress, another sharp contraction making her wince. “Father... the
baby is coming.”
The word Father echoed through the silent ballroom like a thunderclap.
Patricia’s hand froze mid-air. Vanessa’s jaw dropped. Daniel took a step back, his face instantly draining of all
color. He knew the name Arthur Vance. He knew that the Vance conglomerate had literally acquired the prime loan
on his family’s business just last month.
“F-Father?” Daniel stammered, his voice cracking. “Clara... what is this? Who is this man?”
Arthur slowly turned his head to look at Daniel. The sheer coldness in his gaze made the younger man flinch.
“You must be Daniel,” Arthur said, his voice deadly quiet. “The husband who swore an oath to protect my
daughter. The man who just stood by and watched his family treat her like an animal.”
“Arthur Vance...” Patricia whispered, her eyes wide with sudden, paralyzing terror as the pieces finally clicked
together. “You... you are Clara’s father? But she... she had no background! She lived in a tiny apartment when
Daniel met her!”

“She wanted to know if your son loved her for her, or for my name,” Arthur said, his voice echoing through
the silent room. “Clearly, she got her answer.”
Arthur turned back to Clara, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Let’s go, Clara. The carriage is waiting.
We have a family to welcome into the world.”
As the two bodyguards ushered Clara toward the exit, Arthur paused and looked back at the terrified Sterling
family.

“Enjoy this wedding,” Arthur said softly. “It will be the last thing your family ever celebrates.”
