Chapter 14 - The Proposal With No Wheelchair

William proposed on the same Michigan Avenue block where he met the twins.

It was winter again.

Naomi complained about the cold.

Ivy and June knew everything.

Terrible secret keepers.

William stood using his braces.

Marcus kept the wheelchair nearby.

Naomi frowned.

“You’re showing off.”

“Yes.”

He held out a ring.

She stared.

“William.”

“I have a speech.”

“That’s unfortunate.”

The twins laughed.

William ignored them.

“You walked into my life because two children saw something every expert around me had stopped questioning.”

Naomi’s eyes filled.

“You gave me back more than movement.”

He paused.

“You gave me doubt.”

She laughed.

“That’s romantic?”

“For me.”

“Fair.”

“You taught me to question systems, power, doctors, money, and myself.”

He smiled.

“Especially myself.”

Naomi cried.

“And you taught me love doesn't mean solving someone’s life without asking.”

“Still working on that.”

“Yes.”

“So…”

William lowered himself carefully onto one knee with the brace assisting.

Everyone gasped.

Naomi immediately said:

“Don't you dare injure yourself proposing.”

“I rehearsed.”

“Of course you did.”

He held up the ring.

“Will you marry me?”

Naomi looked toward Ivy and June.

They nodded violently.

She smiled.

“Yes.”

Pedestrians applauded.

William struggled getting back up.

June whispered:

“Not smooth.”

May you like

He glared.

“Go away.”
