Chapter 13 - William Walked Into Court

Holt’s trial began two years after the investigation.
William testified.
He could now walk approximately fifty feet with powered braces and forearm crutches.
He could have used the wheelchair.
Instead he chose to walk into court.
Not for spectacle.
For himself.
The room fell silent.
Holt stared.
William approached the witness stand.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Step.
Pause.
Step.
Naomi watched from the gallery.
Ivy and June sat beside her.
Holt began crying.
William did not look away.
On the stand, he described thirty-one years of manipulated treatment.
The prosecutor asked:
“Do you hate Dr. Holt?”
William considered.
“No.”
Everyone looked surprised.
“I hate what he did.”
“Difference?”
“Hate is easy.”
William looked at Holt.
“Responsibility is harder.”
Holt was convicted of conspiracy, medical fraud, evidence destruction, and related crimes.
Eleanor received reduced sentencing for cooperation.
Samuel faced civil penalties for Naomi’s forged termination.
William testified truthfully for all of them.
No revenge.
May you like
No hiding.
That was his victory.
