Chapter 6 - The Immediate Silence

As the police cars drove away, their red and blue lights painting the tall trees of our neighborhood in rhythmic, silent flashes, a deep, profound quiet settled over the house. The front door was closed and locked, the heavy oak barrier sealing us off from the chaos that had just unfolded.
Special Agents Miller and Carter had left shortly after the police, promising to keep us updated on the processing of the charges. The house was empty of Daniel's family for the first time in three months.
Daniel slowly took off his garrison cap and placed it on the entryway table. He unbuttoned the collar of his uniform jacket, letting out a long, heavy sigh that seemed to carry the weight of his entire six-month deployment.
He turned to me, his eyes filled with an intense, quiet concern. He reached out and gently cupped my face with both hands, his thumbs softly stroking my cheeks.
"Let me see that," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion as he examined the red, swollen mark on my left cheek. "Did she... did Gloria do this?"
"Yes," I said softly, leaning into his touch. "She wanted me to sign over the house. She thought if she hit me hard enough, I'd just fold and sign whatever they put in front of me."
Daniel’s jaw clenched so hard I could see the muscles pulsing. "I am so sorry, Elara. I should have been here. I should have seen what they were doing before I left. I knew they were greedy, but I never imagined they would stoop to this... to physical violence, to theft, to forgery."
"You couldn't have known, Daniel," I said, placing my hands over his. "They were very careful to keep it hidden from you. They waited until you were completely out of communication range to make their moves. But they forgot that I do this for a living. They thought because I was quiet, I was oblivious."
Daniel let out a soft, dry laugh, his eyes shining with pride. "An 'office mouse.' They actually called you that."
May you like
"They did," I smiled, a small winced pain reminding me of the cut on my lip. "They really didn't do their research."
"Come on," Daniel said, taking my hand and leading me toward the kitchen. "Let's get some ice on that face, and then you can tell me exactly how you managed to pull off a multi-agency federal sting operation from our dining room table."
