Chapter 3 - The Door Opens

Before Marcus could speak, the distinctive, heavy rumble of a large SUV engine echoed from the driveway outside. The headlights swept across the tall front windows of the living room, casting long, dramatic shadows across the walls.

Tessa gasped, looking out the window. "Who is that? Is that a delivery?"

"It’s too late for deliveries," Marcus muttered, his eyes darting toward the front door with a sudden, uncharacteristic look of unease.

The engine cut off. The sound of car doors slamming shut echoed through the quiet night air. Not just one door, but several. Footsteps began to crunch heavily on the concrete walkway leading to the front porch.

Gloria straightened her silk blouse, trying to regain her composure. "Whoever it is, Elara, you will keep your mouth shut. If you say a single word about any of this nonsense to anyone, I will make sure your life becomes an absolute living hell."

I didn't answer. I simply stood there, my hand resting gently on the hallway wall, watching the heavy oak front door.

A key turned in the lock.

The door swung open, and the cold Virginia night air rushed into the warm hallway. Standing in the doorway, framed by the porch light, was my husband, Daniel. He was dressed in his full, immaculate Army Service Uniform—the dark blue jacket, the crisp white shirt, the rows of brightly colored service ribbons pinned to his chest, and the gold rank insignia of a Major shining on his shoulders. He looked taller, broader, and infinitely more formidable than he had when he left six months ago.

But he wasn't alone.

Standing immediately behind him were two men in dark, tailored suits holding leather briefcases, their faces expressionless and professional. Behind them stood two local police officers in high-visibility jackets, their utility belts clinking quietly as they stepped into the foyer.

"Daniel!" Gloria squeaked, her face instantly transforming into a mask of maternal joy as she took a step forward, her arms opening. "Oh, my darling boy! You're home early! Why didn't you tell us? We were just... we were just keeping Elara company."

Daniel didn't step forward to embrace his mother. He stood perfectly still in the entryway, his eyes scanning the hallway. His gaze locked onto my face.

He saw the red, swollen mark on my left cheek. He saw the thin, dried smear of blood on my lower lip.

The warmth in Daniel’s eyes instantly vanished, replaced by an icy, terrifying stillness that I had only ever seen when he was in full military command mode. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second.

"What happened to your face, Elara?" Daniel asked, his voice low, quiet, and absolutely lethal.

"She... she slipped, Daniel!" Tessa chimed in quickly, her voice high and nervous as she stepped forward. "She was carrying some boxes in the kitchen and she just... she lost her balance and hit the counter. We were just helping her clean up."

Daniel slowly turned his gaze to Tessa, then to Marcus, and finally to his mother. He didn't say a word for several long, agonizing seconds. He simply stared at them with a look of profound, crushing disappointment.

"Major Vance," one of the suited men behind him said quietly, opening his briefcase. "Should we proceed?"

"Proceed," Daniel said.
