Chapter 2 - The Audit Trail

I leaned back against the wall, not out of weakness, but to buy myself the exact ten minutes Daniel needed. I looked at Tessa, whose smug expression radiated absolute confidence.
"Tessa," I said, my voice steady, devoid of the trembling they expected. "Let's talk about the Patriot Veterans Foundation. You know, the charity Daniel set up to provide housing assistance to retired service members."
Tessa's eyebrows twitched, her arms tightening against her chest. "What about it? I do volunteer administrative work for them. Unlike you, I actually contribute to the community."
"You do," I agreed, nodding slowly. "Specifically, you contribute fake invoices from a shell company called 'Apex Logistics and Supply.' In the last ninety days, you’ve submitted five invoices for office equipment and veteran moving supplies, totaling forty-two thousand dollars. The payments were sent to a routing number at a digital bank registered in Delaware. A digital bank account that is registered under your maiden name, Tessa Vance."
The color rapidly drained from Tessa's face, leaving her expensive foundation looking grey and pasty under the warm light of the hallway. "You... you don't know what you're talking about. Those are legitimate vendors."
"I am a forensic financial investigator, Tessa," I said softly, stepping away from the wall. "I don't guess. I audit. I spent my weekends downloading the metadata from those invoices. The digital signature used to approve those payments was a forged copy of my electronic signature. You copied it from a digital authorization form I signed for the HOA last year."
"Marcus!" Tessa shrieked, turning toward the living room. "She's... she's making things up! She's accusing me of stealing!"
Marcus stood up from the sofa, his face flush with anger as he set his glass down hard on the wooden table. "Listen to me, you little bitch. You don't come into this house and threaten my wife. You're a guest in this family. Anything Daniel has belongs to us. We raised him. We supported him. You're just a parasite trying to lock down his pension."
"Marcus, let's talk about your restaurant, 'The Rusty Anchor,'" I continued, turning my gaze to him. "The fifty-thousand-dollar business development loan you secured last month. You used Daniel's active-duty military ID card and a forged copy of his deployment orders to qualify for a specialized military-preference interest rate and a guaranteed government backing program. You signed his name as a co-guarantor on the loan."
Marcus froze, his mouth slightly open, his bravado instantly evaporating. "How... how could you possibly know that?"
"Because the lending bank is a federally insured institution, Marcus. Forging military documents to secure a commercial loan is not just identity theft. It’s a federal banking class-C felony. The bank's compliance department was very interested when I flagged the application metadata last Tuesday."
Gloria stepped between us, her pearls rattling against her silk blouse as she shook with rage. "You insolent, ungrateful child! How dare you spy on my family! I brought Daniel into this world. I allowed him to marry you. Everything he has is mine by right! You will sign those transfer papers tomorrow, or I will make sure Daniel divorces you and leaves you with absolutely nothing!"
"Gloria," I said, looking her directly in the eyes. "You drained his deployment allotment account. Twice. Thirty thousand dollars total. You thought because you still had access to his old college banking portal that he wouldn't notice. But every dollar that leaves that account triggers an encrypted SMS alert to my phone. I've tracked the IP addresses used for those transfers. They map directly to your home Wi-Fi network."
"He owes me that money!" Gloria screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. "I paid for his college! I paid for his first car!"
May you like
"He paid you back ten years ago, Gloria. I have the bank receipts for those transfers too."
The silence that fell over the room was heavy, suffocating, and filled with the sudden, terrifying realization that the "office mouse" they had spent months abusing was actually the cat that had spent the entire time building a cage around them.
