THE SOUND OF HEALING / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Hearing TestThe next morning, Harper stood before the hospital’s executive board. Head Nurse Margaret presented the charges: policy violations, bringing unsterilized personal items into the ward, and maintaining an unprofessional emotional involvement with a patient.

Harper did not offer defensive excuses. She stood tall, her voice clear and filled with conviction.

“I broke the rules,” Harper admitted openly to the panel of doctors. “Because the rules were letting him die inside. Medical charts measure blood pressure and nerve response, but they don't measure a human soul’s will to live. Rowan Cade is a musician. Without music, his recovery was impossible.”

Before the Chief of Medicine could render a verdict, the boardroom doors swung open.

Rowan pushed himself into the room in his wheelchair, holding a thick folder containing his medical charts and his newly completed music manuscript titled “The Heartbeat Symphony.”

Alongside him was Dr. Chen, the lead neurosurgeon.

“Board members,” Dr. Chen announced, stepping forward. “Before you make a decision, you need to see Mr. Cade’s latest auditory evoked potential test results from this morning.”

Dr. Chen projected the brain scans onto the screen. The room went silent.

“The inflammatory swelling surrounding the auditory nerve has receded by seventy percent,” Dr. Chen revealed, smiling broadly. “The nerve tissue is regenerating. Rowan’s hearing is returning. The sensory stimulation provided by Nurse Morris’s unconventional therapy saved his hearing.”
