Chapter 9 - The Handcuff VerdictSix months after the boardroom arrest, the criminal sentencing of Daniel Mercer took place at the Superior Court.

The courtroom was packed with media reporters, family members, and corporate leaders.
I sat in the front row of the gallery wearing an exquisite ivory pantsuit, my undercut hair styled flawlessly, my posture straight, my face radiant with peace.
Daniel sat at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hair unkempt, his face gaunt and hollow, looking like a ghost of the man who had held my shoulders while his mistress cut my hair.
The judge slammed his gavel down, delivering a scathing verdict.
“Daniel Mercer,” the judge declared, his voice echoing through the silent room. “You aided a murderer, siphoned millions from your innocent wife, and attempted to break her spirit through cowardly cruelty. You have proven yourself entirely devoid of honor.”
The judge sentenced Daniel Mercer to fifteen years in state prison for felony money laundering, corporate fraud, and accessory to evidence concealment.

I met his gaze with calm, quiet dignity, watching silently as he was led away through the heavy iron doors forever.
