Chapter 12 - Mark’s Apology to His Mother

On the tenth anniversary of Margaret’s death, Mark asked whether he could speak at the caregiver foundation memorial dinner.

I hesitated.

The foundation was built from her estate and my experience.

But it was also her legacy.

I said yes.

Mark stood before two hundred guests.

“My mother died believing I had chosen a vacation over her.”

The room went still.

He did not soften it.

“She was correct.”

I looked at Cassandra, seated with Maggie.

Melissa beside me.

David held my hand.

Mark continued.

“I spent years telling myself I did not know how serious it was. The truth is I knew enough. I assumed Eleanor would handle it because Eleanor always handled everything. That assumption allowed me to leave.”

Tears filled my eyes.

He spoke about caregiver invisibility.

About adult children outsourcing responsibility to spouses.

About money used as substitute for presence.

Then:

“My mother’s final gift to me was losing control of the company I thought defined me. It took years to understand that she was not destroying me. She was refusing to keep rescuing me.”

Margaret’s lesson completed.

Afterward Mark approached.

“Too much?”

“No.”

“True?”

“Yes.”

He cried.

We hugged.

David stood nearby without jealousy.

Later he said, “I’m glad he became someone you can hug.”

So was I.
