Chapter 11 - The Man Who Didn’t Need My Care

At fifty-four, I met David Keller.

Not at a gala.

Not through business.

At a grocery store.

He dropped a bag of oranges.

I helped pick them up.

Ridiculous.

David was fifty-seven, widowed, an architect, father of two adult daughters. He knew who I was only as Eleanor from the Hudson caregiver foundation.

On our third date, he asked why I was divorced.

“My husband was in Maui with his mistress while his mother died.”

David stopped chewing.

“That is difficult to follow.”

“You asked.”

He laughed.

Then listened.

No advice.

No declaration that Mark was a fool.

No performance.

Months later I noticed something unsettling.

David cared for me.

When I had the flu, he brought soup but left when I said I wanted sleep.

When his daughter needed surgery, he handled it without assuming I would coordinate.

When my foundation faced a crisis, he asked, “Do you want help or company?”

No man had ever asked that distinction.

I fell in love slowly.

Terrifyingly.

When I told Mark I was dating seriously, he said, “Good.”

“Only good?”

“What response do you want?”

I laughed.

“None.”

Then Mark said, “I hope he shows up.”

That was unexpectedly kind.

May you like

“He does.”

“Then good.”
