Chapter 2 - The Secret of the Black Card

ora stared at me, her hands clasped over her mouth as the silence in the room became
absolute. "Elise... who is Mercer?" she whispered, her voice laced with a mixture of fear and
curiosity. "I've known you since college, and I’ve never heard that name."
"Mercer is the reason my father still has a company, and why my mother is allowed to walk into
the Newport Country Club without being escorted out by security," I said, my voice dead and cold. I
stared at the phone screen, hovering over the dial button. "He is the lead investigator for the Federal
Forensic Audit Division. And he has been waiting for my permission to release a file for three years."
To the wealthy, ultra-exclusive Newport high-society, the Vance family was a bastion of oldmoney elegance. My father, Richard Vance, was a real estate mogul whose portfolio supposedly
stretched across New England. But three years ago, while organizing his private study to help with a
tax audit, I discovered a secondary set of digital ledgers. My father wasn't a genius investor; he was
running a massive, sophisticated shell-company scheme, laundering money for offshore syndicates
and using my personal trust fund—left to me by my maternal grandmother—to collateralize his highrisk debts.
When I had confronted him, he and my mother had laughed in my face. They told me that if I
went to the authorities, they would make sure I was completely blacklisted, written out of the family,
and left with nothing. They had already transferred my college savings to Camille, leaving me to work
three jobs to pay off my remaining loans. They believed my silence was guaranteed because I wanted
to protect the family name. But I hadn't stayed silent to protect them. I had stayed silent because I was

waiting for the perfect moment of absolute leverage. I had quietly handed a copy of the encrypted
ledgers to Mercer, telling him to wait until I gave the word to execute the federal freeze order.
"Elise," Nora said, her eyes shining with sudden realization. "If you call him... your father’s firm
will be seized. The wedding... Daniel’s family..."
"Daniel’s family has been pushing my father to sign the joint-venture merger before the
ceremony tomorrow," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "They think they are marrying into a
clean, old-money dynasty. My father spent the last of his liquid assets to rent this hotel suite and pay
for Camille's designer bridesmaids' gowns, relying on the merger to save him from bankruptcy. If I
press this button, the Vance name becomes toxic by tomorrow morning. My father will be in
handcuffs, Camille's trust fund will be frozen, and my mother’s precious social standing will

evaporate into thin air." I pressed the dial button.
