Chapter 7 - Justice DeliveredThe jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes—one of the fastest verdicts in federal trial history.

When the court reassembled for the reading of the verdict, the atmospheric tension in the chamber was electric.
Judge Marcus Vance stood at the bench, holding the official verdict sheets.
“On count one, Aggravated Felony Assault and Attempted Homicide,” Judge Vance read aloud, his voice thunderous. “We find the defendant, Grant Mercer, GUILTY.”
A wave of emotional relief swept through the gallery.
“On count two, Federal Racketeering and Wire Fraud, we find the defendant, Grant Mercer, GUILTY.”
“On count three, Money Laundering and Tax Evasion, we find the defendant, Grant Mercer, GUILTY.”
Grant slumped forward onto the defense table, covering his face with his hands, sobbing hysterically as twenty-four consecutive guilty verdicts were read against him.
Two weeks later, during the formal sentencing hearing, Judge Vance delivered his final judgment with zero mercy.
“Grant Mercer,” Judge Vance declared, slamming his heavy wooden gavel down with resounding force. “Your actions demonstrate a chilling depth of sociopathic cruelty, unyielding greed, and utter contempt for human life and dignity. You used your position of wealth to torture your wife and operate a criminal enterprise.”
“I sentence you to thirty-five years in federal prison at ADX Florence, without the possibility of early parole.”
As federal Marshals chained Grant’s wrists and ankles to lead him away through the heavy iron doors, he turned toward the gallery one last time, tears streaming down his gaunt face, mouthing: “Emily... please forgive me...”
