Chapter 4 - The Bail HearingThe following morning, the central courtroom at the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago was packed to maximum capacity.

National news camera crews stood outside the courthouse doors, broadcasting live coverage under breaking news banners: “Billionaire Logistics Heir Charged with Domestic Torture and Federal Wire Fraud.”
I arrived at the courthouse in a wheelchair pushed by Dr. Ethan Reed, wearing an elegant dark navy dress that covered my heavy bandages, accompanied by Victoria Sterling.
Across the aisle, at the defense table, sat Grant.
The transformation was striking. The pristine, impeccably tailored billionaire in bespoke suits was gone. Grant wore an orange county jail jumpsuit. His dark hair was messy, his face gaunt, his eyes hollow and bloodshot from two nights in a holding cell. Sitting beside him were three high-priced private defense attorneys holding leather briefcases.
When Grant saw me enter the courtroom, a momentary flash of his old arrogance flickered in his eyes, but it was instantly swallowed by the heavy steel chains binding his wrists and ankles.
Judge Marcus Vance presided over the bench.
“Your Honor,” Grant’s lead defense attorney argued, stepping up to the podium with a dramatic flair. “My client, Mr. Grant Mercer, is a respected civic leader, philanthropist, and business executive with no prior criminal record. The media coverage surrounding this domestic dispute has been wildly sensationalized—”
“A domestic dispute, counselor?” Judge Vance interrupted, his voice dropping into a cold, dangerous register. “I have reviewed the forensic medical reports from St. Catherine’s Hospital and the video evidence seized from your client’s private cloud server. It shows a systematic pattern of aggravated felony assault.”
“Your Honor, Mr. Mercer is prepared to post a five-million-dollar cash bond!” the lawyer pleaded frantically. “He poses zero flight risk!”
Agent Sarah Miller stepped forward, handing a fresh set of sealed documents directly to the judge’s clerk.
“Your Honor,” Agent Miller announced clearly, her voice echoing off the high stone walls. “Thirty minutes ago, the United States District Court issued a formal federal indictment against Grant Mercer for federal racketeering, money laundering, and tax evasion. Furthermore, bank records show Grant attempted to wire twelve million dollars to a non-extradition account in Dubai three hours before his arrest.”
A collective gasp erupted from the gallery of news reporters.
Grant’s lead attorney turned to stare at his client in utter shock and disbelief. Grant slumped forward on the defense table, his face turning a sickening, ash-grey color.
Judge Vance slammed his heavy wooden gavel down with thunderous force.
“Bail is denied,” Judge Vance declared coldly. “The defendant will remain in federal custody pending trial. Remand him to the United States Marshals Service!”

As the Marshals grabbed Grant’s arms to lead him through the heavy side doors, he turned toward me, his lips trembling, whispering out: “Emily... please... talk to me...”
I sat straight in my wheelchair, looking directly through him as if he were nothing more than a ghost.
