Chapter 5 - The Eviction of the EmpireWhile Grant sat in a federal detention center awaiting trial, Victoria Sterling and I initiated the total liquidation of his personal and corporate assets.

Under Illinois state law and federal asset-forfeiture guidelines regarding victims of violent crime and corporate fraud, I filed for an immediate fault-based divorce, executing a total freeze on every bank account, vehicle title, and property deed associated with the Mercer name.
Three weeks after the bail hearing, I returned for the first time to the sprawling Lake Forest estate where I had been held captive for three years.
I walked through the grand wrought-iron gates, supported by a wooden cane, accompanied by Dr. Ethan Reed and Victoria.
A team of federal Marshals and private movers were already parked in the driveway, loading Grant’s luxury sports cars, expensive artwork, and designer furniture onto heavy transport trucks.
Inside the grand living room—the very room where soft jazz used to play while Grant hurt me—sat Grant’s arrogant mother, Eleanor Mercer.
Eleanor sat on a plastic covered sofa, clutching a handkerchief, wearing a black mourning veil, looking at me with pure venom as I entered the room.
“You ungrateful, scheming little brat!” Eleanor shrieked, standing up and pointing a trembling, manicured finger at my chest. “After everything my family did for you! We brought you into high society! We gave you a life of luxury! And you set up my son to steal his fortune?!”
I stopped in the center of the room, leaning on my cane, looking at the woman who had turned a blind eye to my bruises for three years.
“Your son didn't give me a life of luxury, Eleanor,” I said, my voice quiet, steady, and razor-sharp. “He gave me a three-year prison sentence. And as for his fortune... it was built on stolen corporate funds and dirty money.”
Victoria Sterling stepped forward, handing an official eviction notice directly to Eleanor.
“Eleanor Mercer,” Victoria announced firmly. “Under federal asset-forfeiture order 412, this property has been seized by the United States Government. You have twenty minutes to collect your personal clothing and vacate the premises.”
“Eviction?!” Eleanor gasped, her face draining of color. “This is the Mercer ancestral estate! My grandfather built this house!”
“Your grandfather built it, but your son used it as collateral for his money-laundering scheme,” I replied coldly. “You can leave quietly, Eleanor... or the Marshals outside will escort you out in handcuffs.”
Eleanor stared at me, her arrogant posture breaking completely, realizing for the first time that the meek, submissive daughter-in-law she used to ignore was now the sole master of her family’s fate.

She picked up her handbag, pulled her coat tightly around her shivering shoulders, and scurried out the front door into the rain without another word.
I looked around the empty, cavernous living room. The dark shadows of the past were finally vanishing, replaced by the clean, bright sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
