Chapter 5 - The Solstice Gala Ambush

On Friday evening, the Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed with five hundred business titans, federal judges, and international media for the Winter Solstice Corporate Gala.
Crystal chandeliers gleamed above tables laden with champagne flutes and white orchids.
The heavy double doors opened, and the room fell into a stunned, breathless hush.
Lauren Bennett walked down the marble steps looking like a goddess. She wore a custom-tailored, backless emerald-silk evening gown that subtly accentuated her poise, with an elegant silk scarf draped across her collarbone.
Walking beside her, dressed in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo with broad, commanding posture, was me.
Standing near the stage holding a glass of scotch was Julian Sterling.
At thirty-five, Julian was tall, handsome, with slicked-back blonde hair and an arrogant, predatory smirk that made my fists tighten inside my pockets.
Julian marched across the floor, his eyes narrowing with venomous fury as he looked from Lauren to my hand resting securely on the small of her back.
"Lauren," Julian hissed, stepping into our path. "Who is this hired gorilla, and why is he standing next to my wife?"
"This is Ethan Parker, my Executive Director of Protective Operations and Chief Personal Advisor," Lauren replied with icy, razor-sharp composure. "And you will address him with respect."
Julian laughed cold, leaning close enough that his breath reeked of bourbon. "You think hiring a bodyguard protects you, Lauren? The board convenes at eight tomorrow morning. By noon, I will have your proxy voting rights, and you will be sitting in a private sanitarium under court supervision."
"You won't be attending any board meetings tomorrow, Julian," I said, stepping between him and Lauren, my voice dropping into a low, lethal baritone that stopped his laughter cold.

Julian glared at me, his face turning crimson. "You don't know who you're dealing with, janitor. I can have you erased from Chicago before sunrise."
"Try it," I replied, holding his gaze without blinking.
