Chapter 2 - The Ten-Million-Dollar Shadow

The following night at 11:58 PM, I stepped out of the executive elevator wearing my best dark jeans, a clean button-down shirt, and a navy wool jacket.

My hands trembled in my pockets. I had spent twenty-four hours agonizing over what a multi-billionaire could possibly want with a broke single father.

When I entered her corner office, the door clicked shut behind me, the electronic deadbolt engaging with a heavy thud.

Lauren sat behind her massive glass-and-steel desk, dressed in an immaculate charcoal pantsuit with a high silk turtleneck that completely concealed the medical brace beneath.

Sitting across from her was Arthur Vance—a distinguished, silver-haired attorney known as the most ruthless corporate litigator in Illinois.

"Sit down, Mr. Parker," Lauren said calmly, gesturing to the leather armchair.

I sat, the leather cool beneath my hands. "Mrs. Bennett... if this is about what I walked into last night, I swear to God I haven't told a soul."

"I know you haven't, Ethan," Lauren replied softly.

Arthur Vance slid a thick, leather-bound docket across the glass table.

"Three years ago, I entered an arranged merger marriage with Julian Sterling," Lauren began, her voice dropping into a register of cold, suppressed grief. "Julian is the managing partner of Sterling Global Capital and holds twenty-five percent of Titan Ventures’ preferred voting shares. To the public, we are a powerful power couple."

She reached up, slowly sliding down the collar of her turtleneck to reveal dark, ligature-shaped bruises around her throat.

"Julian is a violent sociopath," Lauren stated with absolute clarity. "For eighteen months, he has used private surveillance, physical abuse, and corporate extortion to force me into signing over my controlling voting proxies. He broke three of my ribs last Friday when I refused to sign Titan’s green-energy patents over to his offshore shell company in Panama."

My blood boiled in my veins. "Why haven't you gone to the police? You have billions of dollars!"

"Julian’s father is the Chief Administrative Judge of the Cook County Circuit Court, and his private security firm controls the executive detail assigned to this building," Arthur Vance interjected grimly. "If Lauren files a standard police report without unassailable physical evidence and independent armed protection, Julian will have her declared mentally unstable under an emergency conservatorship petition and seize the company before she leaves the precinct."

Lauren looked straight into my eyes.

"Julian is hosting the annual Winter Solstice Gala at the Drake Hotel in two weeks," Lauren explained. "He plans to announce our joint corporate restructuring. I need someone by my side whom he cannot bribe, intimidate, or compromise. I need an independent personal security director and residential escort."

Arthur Vance turned the page of the contract to the signature line.

"The contract is for six months," Arthur said. "Ten million dollars deposited into an irrevocable blind trust in Emma Parker’s name tonight, plus five hundred thousand dollars in immediate cash retention, full private health insurance, and top-tier pediatric care for Emma’s asthma."

I stared at the numbers on the page, my breath catching in my throat.

"Ten million dollars... for a janitor?" I asked, stunned.

"Not a janitor, Ethan," Lauren said, her hazel eyes glistening with raw, honest trust. "A man of honor who knows how to protect what matters. Will you help me survive this?"

I looked at the bruises on her throat, then thought of my sweet daughter sleeping safely across town.

I picked up the pen and signed my name.
