Chapter 5 - The Moving Vans at DawnBy seven o'clock the following morning, two large yellow moving vans pulled up to the curb of the Mercer suburban estate.

I sat in the passenger seat of my friendâs car, watching four professional movers walk up the stone path carrying empty packing boxes.
Daniel ran out onto the front porch in his undershirt, his eyes red from lack of sleep, his hair unkempt.
âElena!â Daniel yelled through the morning air as I stepped out of the car. âWhat is this?! You canât take the furniture!â
âI brought this furniture into the house, Daniel,â I replied, pulling my receipts from a folder. âEvery sofa, table, and rug was purchased with my personal savings before our wedding. I am taking what belongs to me.â
Norma stood behind the screen door, glaring at me like a hawk whose prey had escaped the cage.
For three hours, the movers cleared out the living room, the master bedroom, and the dining area.
By noon, the grand suburban home was stripped bareâleaving only Normaâs old spare bed, two folding chairs, and the stack of unpaid foreclosure notices sitting on the empty marble kitchen counter.

I walked into the master bedroom one last time, unclasped my wedding ring, and set it gently on the windowsill.
âGoodbye, Daniel,â I said softly.
