Chapter 3 - The Unfolding of the TrapâA three-bedroom brick home on Elm Street,â I answered smoothly, my voice calm as glass. âI bought it cash three years ago using my inheritance from my grandmother. Itâs fully renovated, paid off, and entirely in my name.â

Norma set her wooden spoon on a paper towel, her eyes narrowing into sharp slits. âYou bought a house without telling my son? What kind of wife keeps a secret like that?â
âThe kind of wife who notices when her husbandâs family treats her like an ATM,â I replied, looking directly at Norma.
Daniel stepped forward, setting his coffee mug down on the island with a sharp click. âElena, weâre married! Marriages share assets! If you have a paid-off house, why are we renting this suburban place? Why didn't you tell me?!â
I turned to Daniel, my heart cold, hard, and unshakeable.
âWe aren't 'renting' this house, Daniel,â I said, pulling my smartphone from my purse. âI ran a title search on this property two days ago.â
Danielâs face drained of every drop of color.
âThis house is in final foreclosure,â I revealed, holding up the public county records on my screen. âYour mother defaulted on the mortgage six months ago. You brought me into this house, let your mother move back in, and started passing me the utility bills because you were using my salary to cover her unpaid mortgage debt!â

Norma gasped, clutching her cream cardigan against her throat.
Daniel stood frozen, his jaw slack, unable to utter a single word of denial.
