The Rope and the Shadow / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Forensic Audit of a TyrantThe next morning, the corporate offices of Hale Construction were in a state of absolute, chaotic collapse.

Federal agents, accompanied by my forensic audit team, had executed a dawn raid on their servers, sealing the database and locking every single executive out of their accounts.

I sat in Victor’s high-backed leather chair in the executive penthouse office, a cup of strong black coffee in my hand. Leah, my lead technical analyst, sat across from me, her fingers flying across her keyboard as she systematically dismantled Victor’s digital shell empire.

"He was incredibly arrogant, Adrian," Leah said, showing me a complex diagram of wire transfers on the projector screen. "He used his administrative access to Elena’s foundation to route over five million dollars of city contract funds through three dummy corporations registered in Delaware. He thought because he was a major political donor, the state compliance officers wouldn't dare look at his books."

"But they didn't count on a private audit," I said.

"No," Leah smiled. "We’ve flagged every single suspicious transaction and sent the encrypted hashes directly to the District Attorney's office. His corporate lines of credit are frozen. He cannot pay his sub-contractors, his suppliers, or his legal defense team. By Friday, Hale Construction will be bankrupt."

My phone buzzed on the desk. It was an restricted number. I answered, putting it on speaker.

"Adrian Moretti?" a raspy, shaking voice whispered through the line. It was Victor, calling from the county jail's secure phone booth.

"Speaking," I said calmly.

"You... you think you've won, don't you?" Victor hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror. "My father’s partners are already contacting the judges. They’ll have this audit thrown out. You’re destroying a family legacy over a domestic dispute!"

May you like

"This isn't a domestic dispute, Victor," I said, my voice dropping into a register that made the line go completely silent. "You kidnapped my sister, you beat her, and you stole from her foundation. You chose this war. And by the time the grand jury meets on Monday, your legacy will be nothing but ashes. Do not call this number again."

I pressed the red button, cutting off his frantic, desperate shouting, and looked back at the screen. The trap was closing, and Victor had absolutely nowhere left to flee.
