The Rope and the Shadow / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Blood CovenantBy 3:00 AM, the emergency room of the Seattle Memorial Hospital was quiet, save for the soft hum of the heart monitor. Elena lay in the bed, a warm blanket pulled to her chin, her wrists wrapped in clean white bandages. Her face was pale, but her breathing was deep and stable.

I sat in the chair beside her bed, my hands folded, watching over her.

Miriam Cole, my chief legal counsel, walked into the room, her expression serious as she carried a thick leather portfolio. "Adrian, the police have Victor in custody at the county jail. But his family's lawyers are already moving. They are filing an emergency motion to claim that the video recording we captured is inadmissible due to unlawful surveillance laws."

"They can file whatever they want, Miriam," I said, my voice quiet but hard as steel. "The recording was captured on a property owned by Blackridge Holdings—a subsidiary of my firm. Victor was trespassing on my land while committing a felony kidnapping. The surveillance is fully admissible under property protection laws."

"And the financial records?"

"Leah’s already running the audit," I said, looking at my laptop. "We’ve traced the siphoned charity funds directly to Victor’s construction payroll accounts. He wasn't just stealing; he was using the charity to launder money for his offshore real estate investments."

Elena’s eyes slowly fluttered open. She looked at me, her hand reaching out weakly to touch mine. "Adrian... did you find the records? The ones showing the bribe payments to the city inspectors?"

"We found everything, little star," I said, squeezing her hand gently. "Every single transaction. He’s looking at a federal indictment for money laundering, human trafficking, and conspiracy, on top of the kidnapping charges."

"He told me... he told me you were soft," Elena whispered, a faint, tired smile touching her lips. "He said you were just a weak businessman."

"He mistook my patience for weakness, Elena," I said, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "That is the last mistake he will ever make."
