Chapter 7 - The Final SentenceThree months later, the federal trial of Claire Miller and Julian Croft reached its dramatic conclusion.

The courtroom was packed with regional reporters, local farmers, and representatives from military veteran support organizations.
Claire sat at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit, her hair unkempt, her hands bound by heavy wrist chains. The arrogant, charming smile she had worn on the porch was completely gone, replaced by a hollow, desperate stare.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by my parents and Captain Marcus Vance. I wore my dark blue military service dress uniform, complete with my combat ribbons and silver wings.
The presiding judge, the Honorable Judge Katherine Vance, reviewed the final jury verdicts on her bench.
“Claire Miller,” Judge Vance spoke forcefully, her voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. “In my twenty-five years on the federal bench, I have rarely witnessed such a cold, calculating, and heinous display of elder abuse, marital betrayal, and financial fraud.”
Claire kept her head bowed, tears silently dripping onto her jumpsuit.
“You targeted an honorable service member while he was risking his life overseas,” Judge Vance continued. “You systematically starved, tortured, and isolated his elderly parents for corporate profit.”
Judge Vance picked up her heavy wooden gavel.
“On charges of felony elder abuse, grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, and RICO conspiracy, you are hereby sentenced to twenty-two years in a federal maximum-security penitentiary without the possibility of parole.”
Claire let out a loud, hysterical sob, collapsing forward onto the defense table.
“Julian Croft,” Judge Vance turned her sharp gaze to the Apex executive. “For your role as the primary financial instigator and co-conspirator, you are sentenced to eighteen years in federal custody.”
BANG!
The gavel struck the sound block like a bolt of thunder.
As federal marshals stepped forward to drag Claire away, she turned her head toward the gallery, looking directly at me through her tears, her lips trembling.
“Daniel... please...” she whimpered. “Tell them to give me a second chance...”
I stood tall beside my father’s wheelchair, looking at her with cold, unyielding composure.
May you like
“You had two years of chances, Claire,” I said softly. “You chose the chicken coop.”
The marshals pulled her through the heavy rear doors, closing them shut with a final, echoing metallic click.
