THE RECKONING AT OAK RIDGE / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Federal WarrantBefore Claire could utter another lie, the heavy front doors were thrown wide open.

Sheriff Thomas Cole stepped into the foyer, followed by Captain Marcus Vance, four armed state troopers, and two federal agents wearing dark suits labeled FBI - ELDER FRAUD TASK FORCE.

“Claire Miller! Julian Croft!” Sheriff Cole announced, his voice booming over the speaker system. “Nobody move!”

Julian Croft’s face drained of color. “Sheriff, you have no jurisdiction here! Apex Energy holds a legally registered quitclaim deed to this entire estate!”

Federal Agent Sarah Jenkins stepped forward, pulling a thick, official document stamped with the red seal of the United States District Court from her trench coat.

“This is a federal seizure order, Mr. Croft,” Agent Jenkins said flatly. “Under the Federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, all assets, deeds, and contracts associated with Apex Energy’s acquisition of Oak Ridge Farm are frozen immediately pending criminal prosecution.”

Claire panicked. She tried to yank her arm out of my grip, screaming at her high-priced corporate friends. “Julian! Do something! Call our lawyers! Call the Governor!”

Julian Croft didn't even look at her. He took two steps back, putting his hands in the air, completely washing his hands of her. “I have no personal connection to this woman’s domestic actions, Agent. I was merely reviewing land documentation provided by her LLC.”

“You’re named as a co-conspirator on the federal wiretap indictment, Mr. Croft,” Agent Jenkins corrected coolly. “Officers, execute the warrants.”

Two state troopers stepped up behind Claire, twisting her arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

“Get your dirty hands off me!” Claire shrieked, kicking wildly as she was forced down onto her knees on the marble floor. She looked up at me, tears of rage and humiliation streaming down her face. “Daniel! Please! I’m your wife! You can’t let them do this to me! I made a mistake! We can fix this!”

I looked down at the woman I had once loved, feeling nothing but a profound, cold disgust.

“You called my parents useless, Claire,” I said, picking up my duffel bag from the floor. “You told me you did me a favor. Now the federal court is going to do you one.”

As Sheriff Cole dragged Claire and Croft out the front door into waiting police cruisers, the remaining party guests fled into the night like rats off a sinking ship.

I stood alone in the center of my family’s house, listening to the quiet wind outside. The battle for the farm was won, but the war to restore my family’s life was just beginning.
