THE RECKONING AT OAK RIDGE / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Shadow AllianceBy 8:00 p.m., my father was stabilized in the intensive care unit with three broken ribs, severe dehydration, and an infection stemming from untreated wounds. My mother sat beside his bed, holding a warm bowl of soup, her color slowly returning under the hospital lights.

Leaving two armed military police officers stationed outside their room, I walked down to the hospital lobby to meet Captain Marcus Vance—my former commanding officer and a senior investigator for the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps.

Marcus walked in wearing a sharp service dress uniform, carrying a thick leather briefcase.

“Daniel,” Marcus said, shaking my hand firmly. “I reviewed the server logs you uploaded. It’s worse than we thought.”

We sat down in a private consultation room. Marcus laid out four financial dossiers on the table.

“Claire didn't act alone,” Marcus revealed, pointing to a series of bank transfers. “The two men living in your house aren't her friends. They’re corporate operatives working for Apex Energy Group—a multi-state land developer.”

I frowned. “Apex? Why would an energy company care about a three-hundred-acre cattle farm?”

“Because six months ago, state geologists discovered one of the largest lithium deposits in North America running directly beneath your family’s soil,” Marcus explained, his finger tapping the map. “The land is worth roughly forty-five million dollars.”

The picture clicked into place with terrifying clarity.

Claire hadn't just gotten bored while I was at war. She had been approached by Apex Energy. They offered her a multi-million-dollar finder’s fee if she could secure the deed to Oak Ridge Farm before the geological survey became public knowledge.

When my father refused to sell his ancestors' land, Claire and the Apex operatives systematically isolated my parents, cut off their financial access, starved them, and faked medical records to claim my father was mentally incompetent.

“They were planning to sell the mineral rights next week,” Marcus added. “The notary public who signed the deed transfer is on Apex’s payroll.”

I looked at the dossier, a cold, lethal calm settling over my mind.

“What about my military pay accounts?” I asked.

“Drained,” Marcus answered flatly. “She forged your power of attorney six months into your deployment. She took your combat bonuses, your savings, and your family trust funds. Over six hundred thousand dollars, gone.”

I stood up from the chair, adjusting my jacket.

“Where are you going, Daniel?” Marcus asked, standing up with me.

“Back to my house,” I said. “Claire invited some guests over to celebrate her new fortune tonight. It would be rude of me not to attend.”

Marcus grinned—a dangerous, wolfish smile. “I’ll bring the federal marshals.”
