Chapter 7 - The AftermathIn the days following the wedding disaster, the story erupted across national news outlets. Headlines blasted Grant Walker’s image across television screens and internet feed headers: “The Desert Coward: Groom Arrested at Altar After Leaving Family in Death Valley.”

The video footage captured by wedding guests went viral, garnering tens of millions of views within forty-eight hours. Public outrage was immediate and overwhelming.

Richard Hawthorne did not try to cover up the scandal. Instead, he launched a full internal investigation into his company’s finances. My forensic accounting work was verified by independent auditors within seventy-two hours. Not only did my findings prove Grant’s extensive theft, but they also uncovered evidence that Grant had intentionally tampered with the GPS tracking system on our SUV before driving into the desert.

One afternoon, a luxury sedan pulled up outside Ruth and Arthur’s quiet home in Pahrump. Victoria Hawthorne stepped out, holding a large bouquet of white lilies and a small gift box.

I met her on the porch. Victoria looked exhausted, the glamorous high-society bride replaced by a woman humbled and deeply shaken by betrayal.

“Clara,” Victoria said, her voice soft and full of emotion. “I… I came to apologize. I had no idea what he was doing. If I had known even a fraction of the truth—”

“I know you didn't,” I interrupted gently, inviting her to sit on the porch bench. “Grant is a master manipulator. He used both of us.”

Victoria wiped a tear from her cheek and placed the gift box on the table. “My father wants to compensate you. The funds Grant stole from Hawthorne Holdings… a significant portion was recovered from his offshore accounts. My father insists on placing two million dollars into a legal trust for Lily’s education and future.”

I looked at her, surprised. “Victoria, you don't owe me anything.”

“We owe you everything, Clara,” Victoria said firmly. “You saved me from marrying a monster. You saved my family from utter ruin. Please, accept it—not for him, but for her.”

I looked down at Lily, who was resting peacefully in her bassinet beside us, and slowly nodded.
