Chapter 6 - The Trap ClosesSirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as they approached the Hawthorne Estate gates.

Grant’s eyes darted toward the side entrance of the courtyard. The realization that his entire life was collapsing around him sent a surge of desperation through his veins. He looked at the guards, then at Richard Hawthorne, who was already on his phone ordering his corporate lawyers to freeze all accounts related to Grant Walker.
“You ruined me!” Grant roared, turning on me with pure rage. “You were supposed to be nothing! A nobody!”
“I was your wife,” I replied, my voice steady and unwavering. “And I am Lily’s mother. That makes me the one person you should have never crossed.”
Grant lunged toward the side exit, attempting to break through the garden hedges toward the parking structure. But as he rounded the corner of the estate, four law enforcement officers—led by Deputy Sheriff Miller from Pahrump and officers from the Palm Springs Police Department—swept into the terrace with weapons drawn.
“Grant Walker! Put your hands on your head and drop to your knees!” the lead officer commanded.
Grant froze, looking back at the crowd of onlookers filming the entire incident on their smartphones. His face, once featured on local business magazine covers, was now captured from every angle as he was forced down onto the cold stone floor.
Deputy Miller walked over, pulled Grant’s arms behind his back, and snapped the handcuffs tightly around his wrists.
“Grant Walker, you are under arrest for attempted murder, felony child endangerment, corporate fraud, and grand larceny,” Miller stated clearly, reading him his rights while dragging him to his feet.

As Grant was escorted past the altar, he looked at me one last time, his eyes pleading for mercy.
I didn't utter a single word. I simply adjusted the blanket over Lily, turning my back on him as he was loaded into the rear of a police cruiser.
