Chapter 6 - The Captive's LedgerWhile Evelyn languished in her high-security cell at the Rikers Island facility, the federal prosecutors discovered a hidden notebook inside the safe of her private study at the Ashford estate.

It was a handwritten ledger, detailed in Evelyn’s own elegant script, outlining every phase of her plan to isolate me and take control of the company.

I sat in the office of the District Attorney, reviewing the pages of the ledger with Agent Carter.

"It’s a complete roadmap of the conspiracy, Mr. Ashford," Agent Carter said, pointing to a page dated two years ago. "She laid out the exact coordinates of the ravine where Lena's car was to be burned, the amount paid to the local mechanics who rigged the vehicle, and the schedule for Dr. Mercer's falsification of the dental files."

"She planned it for months," I murmured, staring at my mother's handwriting. It was the same elegant script she used to write me birthday cards when I was a child.

"But that's not all," Carter continued, turning the page. "She also had a plan to slowly poison your food with small doses of heavy metals over the next year. She wanted to have you declared medically unfit to run the company, so she could assume sole conservatorship of your estate."

I felt a cold prickle of fear run down my spine. If Lena hadn't escaped when she did, if she hadn't found the strength to walk through that storm to my hotel, I would have been dead or locked in a hospital bed within a year, while my mother ruled my father's empire.

"The evidence is ironclad, Mr. Ashford," Carter said, closing the ledger. "Evelyn is going to trial for kidnapping, conspiracy, and attempted murder. She’s never going to see the outside of a prison wall again."

"Good," I said, standing up. "Make sure she stays there."
