The Rain-Slicked Mirage / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - Unearthing the GravesBy Monday morning, the news of the Ashford family scandal had completely consumed the financial blogs and newspapers of New York. The Ghost of Ashford Holdings: CEO’s Wife Found Alive; Mother Held on $5 Million Bail.

I sat in the private, sunlit study of the Ashford estate, my daughter, Grace, sleeping peacefully in a bassinet beside my desk. Lena sat in the armchair across from me, wearing a soft, clean cream sweater, her face looking rested for the first time in two years.

Marcus, my private investigator, stood by the window, a thick leather folder of financial documents in his hands.

"We’ve unreeled the entire network, Daniel," Marcus said, sliding a spreadsheet across the mahogany desk. "Evelyn wasn't just siphoning money to keep Lena hidden. She was using Ashford Holdings’ capital to fund a private real estate venture in upstate New York—the very same property where Lena was kept captive."

"The equestrian property?" I asked, my jaw tightening.

"Yes," Marcus nodded. "It’s registered under a dummy corporation called Silverline Estates, which lists Evelyn’s personal attorney, Arthur Cole, as the sole director. Cole has already been arrested for conspiracy and obstruction of justice."

"Can we trace the funds back to the company?" Lena asked, her voice steady and determined.

"Every single cent," Marcus smiled. "Since the transactions were made without board approval, we have the legal right to seize all assets linked to Silverline Estates and return them to the corporate treasury. That includes the property itself, which is valued at fifteen million dollars."

"Good," I said, reaching out to gently squeeze Lena's hand. "We are going to sell that property and donate the entire proceeds to organizations that help victims of domestic violence and kidnapping. I don't want a single stone of that place associated with our family."

"Thank you, Daniel," Lena whispered, a tear of pure relief running down her cheek.

The long, dark night of our separation was finally ending, and the dawn of our new life was beginning to rise.
