Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Masquerade"This is a lie!" Evelyn shrieked, her composed, elegant facade completely shattering as she lunged toward the presentation screen. "That video is a deepfake! Lena died in that ravine! The dental reports proved it!"

"The dental reports were forged, Mother," I said, my voice echoing through the silent ballroom. "And we have the bank records showing the two-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer from your private offshore account to Dr. Mercer’s clinic in Switzerland, dated the exact same week Lena went missing."
Dr. Mercer, who had been sitting at the VIP table near the front of the stage, stood up so fast his chair fell backward. He tried to run toward the service exit, but two of Marcus’s security men immediately stepped into his path, blocking him.
"Dr. Mercer is already in custody, Evelyn," Agent Carter said, clicking a pair of handcuffs into place around her wrists. "He confessed to falsifying the records twenty minutes ago."
"Daniel, please!" Evelyn cried, turning to me, her voice desperate and pleading as the guests began to whisper frantically around us. "I did it for you! I did it to protect the company! Lena was going to take everything your father built! She was going to ruin us!"
"You did it for yourself, Evelyn," I said, looking down at her with a disgust so profound it felt like a physical weight. "You wanted to rule this company, and you were willing to bury my wife and my child alive to do it. You are no longer my mother. You are a criminal."
The federal officers began to escort Evelyn out of the ballroom, her expensive midnight-blue dress dragging on the marble as she screamed obscenities, her diamond jewelry reflecting the flashing cameras of the local reporters who had just breached the hotel lobby.

I turned to the board of directors, who sat in stunned silence at the main table.
"The dinner is canceled, gentlemen," I said coldly. "We have a transition of power to organize."
