Chapter 3 - The Breaking of Flesh and TrustRebecca turned fully around, her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated contempt. "You ungrateful, dramatic little—" she started, stepping forward aggressively while brandishing the heavy pot of boiling stew.

"Mom, watch out—" Ethan mumbled lazily, not even bothering to look up from his coffee mug.
Whether it was deliberate malice or careless, arrogant recklessness, Rebecca’s foot caught on the edge of the kitchen mat. Instead of catching her balance, her arms jerked violently forward. The entire contents of the scalding, bubbling beef stew erupted from the metal pot in a thick, steaming wave of liquid, carrots, potatoes, and boiling broth.
It crashed directly into Emily’s lap and legs.
The pain was not immediate; it was an instantaneous, blinding white-hot shock that paralyzed her nervous system. Then came the agonizing, searing roar as the boiling liquid soaked through her thin morning robe and fused against her bare skin.
Emily shrieked—a sound so primal and tortured it rattled the apartment windows. She collapsed backward onto the hardwood floor, her hands clawing desperately at her burning thighs as blisters began to rise before her eyes. The smell of scorched skin and spiced beef filled the kitchen.
"Oh, for heaven’s sake!" Rebecca screeched, stepping back while clutching her apron, completely unconcerned with Emily’s screaming agony. "Look at what you made me do! You startled me! You jumped right into the path of the pot!"
Ethan finally dropped his coffee mug. It shattered against the floor, spraying ceramic and dark liquid across the room. He rushed forward, but instead of kneeling beside his wife who was writhing in unimaginable agony on the floor, he threw his hands up in furious exasperation. "Emily! What is wrong with you?! Why are you always making such a scene over a little spill?!"

Emily looked up from the floor, tears streaming down her face, her voice a shattered whisper. "Ethan... my legs... it’s boiling... call an ambulance..."
Ethan didn't reach for his phone. Instead, standing over her while Rebecca smugly crossed her arms in the background, Ethan pointed an accusing finger down at his wife and shouted the demand that sealed his fate forever. "Stop screaming right now and apologize to my mother for ruining her pot roast!"
