Chapter 10 - Legal Architecture

Three miles away in a high-rise office overlooking the Chicago River, Emily Carter sat across a polished walnut conference table from Arthur Sterling, senior partner at Vance & Sterling Corporate Law Firm—coincidentally the same firm where Ethan’s employer held its corporate retainers.
Arthur Sterling adjusted his reading glasses, staring down at the thick manila folder Emily had slid across the table. His professional composure cracked slightly as he read through the corporate compliance documents detailing insider trading and embezzlement at Apex Financial Technologies.
"Ms. Carter," Arthur said slowly, looking up at her with a mixture of professional awe and wariness. "Where did you obtain these internal compliance logs?"
"Let’s just say my husband had a very messy habit of leaving his encrypted work files unsecured on our home network," Emily replied smoothly, her posture straight, her bandaged legs resting comfortably beneath the table. "And when I discovered my husband and his boss Marcus Vance were systematically looting corporate accounts while framing junior accountants, I made local copies for safe keeping."
Arthur swallowed hard. Marcus Vance was one of the firm’s most lucrative clients. If these documents became public, the fallout would destroy Apex Financial and drag Vance & Sterling through a catastrophic legal scandal.
"What is your objective, Ms. Carter?" Arthur asked carefully, recognizing he was dealing with a master strategist. "Are you looking to file criminal charges against Mr. Vance and your husband?"
"Not yet," Emily smiled coolly. "I want a complete, uncontested dissolution of my three-day marriage on the grounds of extreme domestic cruelty and physical endangerment. I want a permanent restraining order preventing Ethan Whitmore and his mother, Rebecca, from ever coming within one mile of me, my family, or my property. And finally... I want a total financial settlement equivalent to half of Ethan’s future projected earnings, backed by Apex Financial’s corporate accounts as a severance package for his immediate termination."
Arthur stared at her in stunned silence. She wasn't just defending herself; she was orchestrating a surgical corporate and domestic execution.

"And if he refuses?" Arthur whispered.
Emily opened her handbag and pulled out a flash drive, placing it gently on top of the folder. "If he refuses by 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, a duplicate copy of this flash drive goes directly to the federal prosecutor’s office, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the national media outlets. Ethan and Marcus Vance will be wearing orange jumpsuits by the end of the week."
