Chapter 12 - Rebecca’s House of Cards

The final collapse of the Whitmore dynasty happened not in a courtroom, but in a corporate boardroom.
The morning after the annulment hearing, Ethan walked into the executive offices of Apex Financial Technologies expecting to find solace in his work and support from his mentor, Marcus Vance. Instead, when he reached the executive floor, security guards were standing outside Marcus’s office doors packing boxes of files into industrial shredders.
Marcus Vance was nowhere to be seen—having already fled the state
upon receiving notification from federal investigators.
Before Ethan could even turn around, the company’s chief executive officer, accompanied by corporate legal counsel, stepped out of the conference room and blocked his path.
"Ethan Whitmore," the CEO said coldly, dropping a thick manila envelope onto the reception desk in front of him. "Effective immediately, your employment with Apex Financial is terminated for gross corporate malfeasance, conspiracy, and insider compliance violations."
"What?!" Ethan shrieked, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "You can't fire me! I didn't do anything! This is a mistake!"
"We received an exhaustive corporate audit this morning detailing your direct involvement in Marcus Vance’s embezzlement scheme," the CEO replied flatly. "Furthermore, federal marshals have frozen all corporate indemnification policies for anyone linked to the fraud. Clean out your desk and leave the building before we call federal authorities to escort you out."
Ethan stumbled backward, the ground completely disappearing beneath his feet. Fired. Disgraced. Penniless. Divorced. Stripped of his corporate status, his salary, and his social standing in a single week.
When he staggered out of the building into the biting Chicago wind, his phone rang. It was Rebecca.

"Ethan! Thank god you answered!" Rebecca’s voice screamed through the speaker, frantic and hysterical. "The bank just seized my house! They said my mortgage default notices were triggered because my subsidiary loans tied to Marcus Vance’s accounts were frozen by federal marshals! Ethan, where am I going to live?!"
Ethan stared blankly at the bustling downtown traffic, the bitter cold freezing the tears on his cheeks. For the first time in his entire life, he didn't have an answer. He didn't have money, he didn't have a home, and he didn't have his mother’s comforting illusions to hide behind. He was entirely, utterly alone.
