Chapter 8 - The Grand Ballroom

The grand ballroom of the historic downtown hotel was breathtaking. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over cascading floral arrangements of white roses and eucalyptus. Two hundred guests—colleagues, close friends, and Julian’s warm, supportive family—sat in elegant rows of white chairs facing the flower-draped altar.
The string quartet began playing Pachelbel’s Canon in D.
My heart swelled with profound emotion as I walked down the aisle on the arm of Julian’s father, a kind retired judge who had treated me like a daughter from the day we met. Standing at the altar was Julian, looking devastatingly handsome in his black tuxedo, his eyes shining with unshed tears as he watched me approach. When our hands met, the warmth of his grip anchored my entire soul.
The ceremony was poetry—a seamless blend of shared vows, gentle laughter, and absolute commitment. When the officiant pronounced us husband and wife, Julian pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss that made the entire ballroom erupt into thunderous applause and cheers.

We walked back up the aisle together under a shower of white rose petals, stepping into the cocktail reception area before the grand dinner and dancing commenced. We felt untouchable.
Until the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open, and my parents marched in, flanked not by joy, but by raw, unbridled fury.
