Chapter 10 - The Snap of the Trap

A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Bridesmaids shrieked, and several male guests stood up abruptly, shouting in outrage.

As I lay on the cold marble, tears springing to my eyes from the stinging, burning pain across my cheek, my mother’s reaction crossed the line from toxic to psychotic. Seeing me fallen, instead of showing an ounce of maternal remorse, Mom's face twisted into an expression of rabid fury.

"She's ruining everything!" Mom shrieked hysterically.

Before anyone could react, Mom dropped the heavy metal decorative accent table she had been gripping, picked it up with both hands, and swung it directly downward toward my head with such murderous force that the heavy iron legs whistled through the air.

Pain exploded across my skull—a blinding, white-hot flash of agony as the heavy metal edge grazed my temple, sending a spray of crimson blood across my white veil and onto the polished floor. I curled into a fetal position, screaming in absolute agony, clutching my head as blood began soaking into my hair.

Instead of rushing to help me, my parents stood over me and started laughing sarcastically—a high-pitched, manic sound of sheer entitlement and malice. "That's what you get, you selfish brat!" Mom cackled, hefting the metal table again.

The entire ballroom froze in horrified disbelief.
