Chapter 7 - The Final Warning

The morning of the wedding arrived with brilliant, crisp autumn sunlight streaming through the windows of the bridal suite. I stood before the full-length mirror dressed in an exquisite, off-the-shoulder lace wedding gown that Julian’s mother had helped me select. For the first time in my life, I felt radiant, secure, and entirely complete. My bridesmaids—loyal friends from college and my architectural firm—surrounded me with laughter and champagne, shielding me from any lingering anxiety.

Then, the heavy oak door of the suite swung open without a knock.

Mom and Dad strode in, uninvited and aggressive. Dad wore a tight tuxedo that looked like it was cutting off his circulation, and Mom’s face was caked in heavy makeup that couldn't hide her frantic desperation. My bridesmaids immediately stepped back, sensing the toxic shift in the room.

"Out. All of you, leave us alone with our daughter," Mom commanded, waving her hand dismissively at my friends. When my friends hesitated, I nodded softly, and they reluctantly filed out into the hallway, lingering just outside the open door.

"Chloe," Dad snarled, stepping up close to me, ignoring the delicate lace of my dress. "This is your absolute last chance. We spoke to the coordinator. We know there are cash envelopes arriving at the gift table. We want the envelope box handed over to us right now, or we swear to God, we will walk down that aisle and announce to every single guest that you're a liar and a thief who abandoned her own family."

I looked into my father’s eyes—the same eyes that had looked past me at age nine when he crowned Jake with a blue football helmet. There was no love there. Only greed, entitlement, and bottomless contempt.

"No," I said clearly, my voice steady and unwavering. "You are not getting a cent. Get out of my bridal suite, and if you try to approach us at the altar, security will remove you."
